Eureka Stadium in Ballarat was foreshadowed as the venue for athletics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
However, the Victorian Government announced on 18 July 2023 that the March 2026 event would not go ahead.
The venue, which is also known commercially as Mars Stadium, was to undergo a $150m upgrade from being a local AFL field to having a temporary laid track and increased seating. The current capacity for 11,000 spectators (6,000 seated) was to be temporarily upgraded to 30,000 for the Commonwealth Games, before reverting to 11,000 once the athletics track was removed.
The venue has previously been used primarily as an AFL and cricket venue, and has also been the site of the Ballarat Gift.
A new track (which was to be the warm up track for the Commonwealth Games) will still be laid on the adjacent Ballarat Showgrounds, which are due to close in October 2023. It is expected that this track replace Llanberris Reserve as Ballarat’s main athletics venue.
