The Lieutenant Commander Al Vonsenden Athletic Track and Field is located at HMAS Cerberus on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula.
HMAS Cerberus is the Australian Navy’s premier training establishment. About 6,000 personnel are trained annually, averaging 800 trainees onboard at any one time.
The athletics track was upgraded from a scoria surface in April 2019 as part of a significant redevelopment of the base. The track was renamed in the memory of Lieutenant Commander Allan VonSenden, who served in the Navy for 38 years before losing his battle with cancer in 2014. Lieutenant Commander VonSenden reached the rank of Warrant Officer Physical Training Instructor, then commissioning to Sports Officer, commanding the Physical Training School at HMAS Cerberus.
