AIS Track and Field Centre

    The AIS Track and Field Centre is Canberra’s main athletics venue.

    The venue was originally constructed in 1985 as the warm up venue for the IAAF World Cup Athletics meet, which was held at the adjacent Bruce Stadium.

    The track is part of the Australian Institute of Sport, which was opened in 1981 as a high performance sport training centre. The impetus for its creation was Australia not winning any gold medals at the 1976 Olympic Games. The Institute previously offered residential scholarships to athletes, but this was discontinued in 2014. The track is now mainly used by local athletes and for high performance camps.

    The track was resurfaced in 2019 and is a blue Mondo surface. It is an extremely popular venue amongst sprinters and jumpers, due to the surface and Canberra’s hot, dry summer climate.

    The venue is managed by the Australian Institute of Sport.

    World Athletics Class 2 Facility The track is a Sportflex Super X 720 surface and is a World Athletics Class 2 Certified Facility.
